KMA-First of all congratulations on your performance at the UFC. You
showed a lot of heart in your fight with George Saint-Pierre. How did
you feel about that fight. Is there anything in hind sight you think
you could have done to change the outcome?
Mayhem-Right afterward I felt terrible. I was mad at myself for not doing the things I had planned to do, and how I never got a chance to get my game going- just getting outclassed. But I DO fight for the fans, so the fact that they appreciated that I never would give up, no matter how bad things got, and showed all kinds of love for a haole made me feel a little bit better. But everytime I even THINK about getting cocky or lazy, I just watch GSP stomp me out. Thanks for starting the interview like this, I'm now going to jump off of a building. haha.
KMA-I have read a few of your interviews and you seem to be an entertainer
as well as a skilled fighter. Do feel it is important to entertain
the fans with your ring entrances, interviews and even your in the
ring flair?
Mayhem-Yup. For ME it is important. That's just who I am. I figure we can stand on Kapiolani blvd and watch people fight if you just wanna see a fight. If I'm at a fight I want to be wowed. I want the fighters to do something amazing, like in the matrix, or have fire shoot out of their asses. You see Lousieux spinning back kick? Stuff like that! You gotta take risks to get the fans hyped. Sometimes it pays off for you, sometimes it doesn't, but the fans get a kick.
KMA-You have some pretty good striking skills as well as some slick
submissions. What are some areas that you think you need to work on
to become the UFC welter weigh champion?
Mayhem-If you stop evolving, you die out. I think I need to work on all the areas of my game, plain and simple. I watched the St. Pierre fight last night, and one thing I noticed was that I was so hyped that I was unfocused. That's something I won't let happen again. I call it "octagon shock" you get in front of 20,000 fans live and the gazillion watching at home and some guys tense up so tight they look like robots in there- others, like me start fighting like a street fight, which doesn't help either. Other than that aspect, I'm sharpening all the areas that I can.
KMA-Now for the good part. You have made a name for yourself here in
Hawaii by beating some of the most loved fighters here like Egan
Inouye and Ron Jhun. How do you feel coming onto our turf and beating
our guys like that?
Mayhem-HA! Your turf? I'm starting to feel like it's MY turf. I feel like an island boy everytime I'm over there. The pastiest island boy you've ever seen, but still an island boy, just because of how well everyone treats me over there, I feel right at home. I know a lot of the mokes hate me, but I don't care, keep hating on me, I'm going to keep doing my best every time I step in the ring. You don't have to like me, but I'm going to make you respect me.
KMA-Did you really say that you are the most notorious haole since Captain
Cook?
Mayhem-Ha!!!!! Yea, but they ate his liver, and I don't know the whole story he probably deserved it. At least he went out in style, on the island.
KMA-How many Hawaiians does it take to beat Mayhem?
Mayhem-I dunno, it depends on what part of the island I'm on. I don't think I can handle more that 3 of those 300 pound pineapple tossers!
KMA-I heard you had a bad experience in one of your earlier trips to
Hawaii. Are you being treated better nowadays? Have you ever been to
Kauai?
Mayhem- Haven't been to Kauai just yet, but I have friends from out there, probably some of your cousins, so I'd like to make it to all the islands of Hawaii. You'd be surprised how Vegas is little Hawaii. A lot of my training partners are Hawaiians, and I feel like an islander. A really really white one, but still an islander. I've never really had a bad experience over here, even if things do go bad- DAMN, you're in friggin Hawaii!!!!
KMA-I don't know much about your opponent Jason Moreno but I've read on
the Underground forum about a grudge match. Is this a one sided
grudge or do you have a beef with this guy. Any juicy sound bites
before we sign off?
Mayhem-Well I thought his name was Mark, but it doesn't really matter what his name is. I have beef with this guy because he falsed me when I beat Ronald Jhun. Then the doctor wouldn't let me fight him because of an injury I had with my eye, and his camp was acting like I was scared. I ain't scared, and I'm going to try NOT to submit him.
KMA-Thanks for your time. If you ever come to Kauai you will be my guest.
Mayhem-THANKS BRADDAH!
