Rumble on the Rock recap

KENGO URA DEF. MIKE MALONE
Kengo from Enson Inoue’s Pure Bred in Japan took out Hawaii fighter Mike Malone. Mike was initially looking to unload his heavy hands but Kengo kept trying for the takedown and eventually was able to get Malone to his back. From there Kengo unloaded some pretty good shots from the ground. He would stand up from Malone's guard and drive down for a punch Fedor style. After some effective ground and pound Kengo finally leaned back from the guard and applied a tight ankle lock which had Mike limping off the stage.

ROSS “DA BOSS” EBENEZ DEF. JOSH DONAHUE
Ross was originally supposed to be fighting Jason Von Flue from "The Ultimate Fighter 2" but had to fight a last minute replacement Josh Donahue. Josh weighed in at 13 pounds lighter than Ross but he must have weighed a lot less when he stepped into the ring. Ross capitalized on this by stuffing all of Josh's shots and punishing his with hard shots which staggered Josh badly. Josh applied an armbar but Ross was able to pick him up for the Rampage style slam. Ross then brutally pounded Josh on the ground for a TKO.

SCOTT JUNK DEF. VILATONU VONOKALAIFIA
The match started with Vilatonu looking to strike and Junk looking for the clinch/takedown. Vlilatonu was able to land on top during the clinch and he mounted Junk. He tried some ground and pound which wasn't very effective. Junk did a good job tying up his opponent and got a reversal. From there Junk unloaded some really good shots from the mount and won via TKO.

YUSHIN OKAMI DEF. ANDERSON SILVA
You read correct, Okami beats Silva. From the beginning it looked like this fight was going to be short. Silva was unloading some bombs from both hands and feet. He dominated the fight in every facet until he was finally dragged to the ground. Silva seemed to be doing more damage from his back which is rare in MMA. Controversy struck when Silva delivered a heel to Okami's head when in his guard. The blow twisted okami's head violently and he was almost unconscious. Anderson started to celebrate until he found out he had been disqualified because in ROTR you are not allowed to up kick when you opponent has his knees on the ground.

JAKE SHIELDS DEF. DAVE MENNE
This was the first fight of the night to go the distance. Dave won the stand up war with Jake shooting constantly to try to get the fight onto the ground where he was able to win the fight via judges decision. Jake effortlessly passed Dave's guard and mounted him, he really made Dave's guard look bad. On the ground he was able to land a few blows with his creative ground and pound but he mainly racked up points and didn't seem to damage Dave much.

CARLOS CONDIT DEF. CHARUTO VERISSIMO
This was the biggest upset of the night. Charuto seemed to have a low seeded fighter in Condit and most peoplein the audiance were looking forward to seeing him advance, Condit had other plans however. From the opening bell Condit caught Charuto with a stiff jab. Charuto then went for a takedown and was caught with a huge knee which dropped Charuto like a sack of potatoes. Charuto's warrior instincts took over and he tried to roll over to work his guard but Condit pounced and hit Charuto with the hardest ground strikes of the night. Charuto was beaten in 17 seconds.

FRANK TRIGG DEF. RON JHUN
This fight was pretty predictable. Ron tried to unload and Frank kept taking Ron down. Trigg made no real effort to pass the guard and seemed to only strike enough to prevent the ref from standing the fighters back on their feet. Trigg did stand with Jhun later in the fight and got off some good shots. When Jhun would start to build some steam however Trigg would shoot and often get the takedow. Trigg won the judges decision easily.

BUTTERBEAN DEF. WESLEY “CABBAGE” CORREIRA

For the main event Cabbage and Butterbean did not dissapoint the fans. The fight was under special rules which clearly favored Butterbean. There were no submissions and the fighters would be brought back to their feet after 15 seconds. Cabbage fought a smart fight and mixed up his striking with punches and kicks. I was impressed with Butterbeans ability to defend the leg kicks as he checked or lifted his leg for most of the kicks. Cabbage was able to drag Butterbean down and opened up a can on Butterbean who was pinned against the cage. Butterbean held on for 15 seconds and later rocked Cabbage with a flurry of punches. Cabbage tried to work his thai clinch but Butterbean was too big and strong for Cabbage to land anything effective, Butterbean actually was firing knees back at Cabbage.
Late in the first round Cabbage seemed to be injured. It looked as though Cabbage may have had a broken rib. Cabbage was unable to answer the bell and Butter bean won his second MMA fight. Later there was a rumor that Cabbage had a broken arm, not rib and it may have been injured BEFORE the fight.

New interview with Adrienna “aj” Jenkins

KMA-I heard about your opponent Mystee Blackwood. She seems overmatched
but I give her credit for stepping up against a more experienced
fighter in yourself. Do you know anything about your opponent?
AJ-No, Not really. I don't look into any of that. I am basically told who and when I am fighting; and to get into shape. I was told her record was 6-3; so I think she is the more experienced one. I am hoping for a good fight; I know that we are both training our best for it.
This will be your homecoming fight. It will also be the first female
MMA fight on Kauai and a title fight. Are you excited about all of
this?
I am very excited about the event. This will be the first fight that my mom and family gets to see live. (I usually send her a DVD of my fights when i can get a hold of them.) And its so cool to be apart of a first; expectably a women's fight. Working with Vance Pascua so far has been really helpful- the event is going to be a really good venue to go and watch.

KMA-Some people may say that female fighting is boring, lesser caliber or
more of a spectacle. What is you response to this?
AJ-To each its own. You cant really expect to change people's minds. Example- I recently attended an event in Moline Illinois to corner some of our fighters. Our fighters did great; but in the middle of warming up one; I hear on the mic -" next, we have a women's MMA match!" I thought, awesome! When i went to the ring- it was a different story. Needless to say- It was really disappointing. I didn't want this crowd to think women participating in the sport wear outfits like that and make-out for the crowd cheers. But I cant explain that to the thousand something people who leave the event witnessing that. The girls in that ring that night haven't been through the things i have been through to train to be a fighter. So, What I do is train to the best ability that I can; And when i am asked to fight; I am being asked to to do just that, be a Professional Fighter. After that- Ill let the individuals with opinions think what they want to think.
KMA-As the sport of mixed martial arts continues to grow do you feel
female fighters will begin to pick up more female orientated sponsors?

AJ-I hope so- there are some really talented fighters worth investing in.
If you had a choice who would be your sponsors?
I have a really good clothing sponsor right now- Knockout Hawaii (owned by Kippy Akana) He really supports me as a fighter, and hooks me up with cool clothes. I dont have any financial/Supplement sponsors. I am no where near that caliber yet. lol, so for now- Kippy is awesome.

KMA-Are you presently training other females to fight?
AJ-No- there unfortunately are no women training to fight at Militech presently.
As far as women's self defense what do you think of these women self
defense classes?
They are cool- Most of the instructors understand what they are showing you. And i have heard of situations where women are grateful that they attended a class.
KMA-Have you though of starting a women's self defense class?

AJ-No way- I am so thankful where i have never been in a situation where i have to defend myself in a self-defense manner; and i have no idea how i would react if i did. So, I wouldn't want to influence any of that. I would rather learn from someone who knows what they are doing in that type of scenario.
KMA-After your fighting career is over what are you plans for the future?

AJ-I am in school for Physical Therapy and have a few years left with that; so that will be the financial aspect of things. I see myself always participating in Fighting one way or another. My fiancé's Career and Life revolves around fighting- so, It will be in our lives for a good while.

KMA-Any last words for the Kauai fans?

AJ-Of course! Please support your local fighters; Come and watch the next Kauai Cage match if you can.It sounds like its going to be a fantastic card and a good time. I know hawaii has had its pacthes of problems with MMA- but if you keep supporting the positive aspects of the sport; it can only grow. Thanks to www.kauaimartialarts.com, www.knockouthawaii.com and Vance Pascua with Ainofea. God Bless and Happy new year to everyone too!
